Australian Capital Territory Business Name Registrations

Looking to register a Business Name for your new Australian Capital Territory-based business, then Information Brokers is the right place to be.

Starting a business can be an exciting and challenging time for any entrepreneur. One of the crucial steps in establishing your business is registering its name.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of registering a business name in the ACT.

Before you can register your business name, you need to choose a name that is available and meets the Austtralian Government’s guidelines for business names. You can do this by using the Business Name Availability Search tool on the Information Brokers website. Your business name should be unique and not already registered by another business. It should also not be misleading or offensive, and it should not include any restricted words or phrases, such as "bank" or "university."

To register a business name in the ACT, you need to have an Australian Business Number (ABN). You can apply for an ABN through the Information Brokers website. Once you have an ABN, you can proceed with registering your business name.

Once you've checked the availability of your chosen business name and chosen your business structure, it's time to register your business name. You can do this online through the Information Brokers Business Name Registration portal. You'll need to provide information such as your business structure, ABN, and contact details, as well as pay a registration fee. The current fee for registering a business name in A.C.T is $65 for one year or $145 for three years.

Once you have submitted your application, ASIC will review it and assess whether your chosen business name meets the requirements for registration. If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email with your registration details. If your application is not approved, ASIC will provide you with reasons for the decision and give you the opportunity to amend your application and resubmit it.

Business name registrations in the ACT are valid for either one or three years, depending on the registration option you chose. It is your responsibility to renew your registration before it expires.

Here are a few tips to help make the process of registering your business name in ACT as smooth as possible:

1. Choose a unique and memorable business name that accurately reflects your brand and makes it easy for customers to find you.

2. Consider trademarking your business name to give you exclusive rights to use it and protect it from infringement by other businesses.

3. Register your business name as soon as possible to avoid the risk of someone else registering it first.

4. Keep your registration details up to date, including your business address and contact information.

5. Be aware of the renewal dates for your business name registration and make sure you renew it on time to avoid any penalties or fees.
